An extension of the Target Young Audiences Program, Target YAP + includes added support for classroom teachers. Teachers still attend an educational conference and use the Discovery Guide with their classes; additionally, some lessons will be led by a trained teaching artist at in-class sessions both before and after the play.

Spring Awakening
Music by Duncan Sheik
Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater
In sessions both with you and with a teaching artist, students seeing this coming-of-age musical will compare the societal norms of late 19th century Germany with today’s standards and explore the costs and benefits of innocence versus sophistication. They will also address why the creators chose to express their ideas through a musical adaptation instead of a revival of the 1891 play Spring’s Awakening. Through these discussions, we will prepare students to face the frank sexual content of this play with maturity and understanding.

Particularly recommended for classes studying European history, social history, ethics, child development, musical theatre or literary adaptation.

This play includes simulated sex, masturbation, brief nudity, abortion, profanity, suicide, mature themes. The script and soundtrack are available at many bookstores and libraries.
