Each year in Speak to Me, we work with one school to produce an original play. In 2007 – 2008, Speak to Me was at Lynwood High School. Students wrote letters to future participants.
Dear you,
Look around you. This is your new family. After this program is done, that quiet girl/boy in front of you is going to be one of the best people in your life. Time will pass and you will begin hearing truths spill from your mouth and the mouths of your brothers and sisters, and you will be shocked. Issues will present themselves and you might not agree, but they will be there.
Phase I will end. You will miss it. Phase II is here before you know it, and your truths now will become art. Embrace the position you have and give it your all. It will get boring; it will be the best day you ever had.
Then the performance: your peers will recognize the truths you all spoke of and they will find the power to break free. So will you. Congratulations.
Sincerely,
Amy S.
