OVERVIEW
"A SENSATIONAL REVIVAL
…flows between comedy and tragedy
while hilariously revving up to all-out farce ...
The acting is top-notch across the board.
THIS PRODUCTION IS SO REVITALIZING that John Guare’s ruthless farce seems to be not just speaking directly to our age but mirroring its most pervasive pathologies. Miracles in the air…”
- Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times
“Guare’s story tackles the thorny issues of vanity, ego self-deception, celebrity glorification and other personal and societal dysfunctions. Along the way, Guare steers us from sitcomland to Pinteresque bleakness, slapstick and farce…”
- Paul Hodgins, The Orange County Register
The Pope’s 1965 visit to New York City brings the hope of answered prayers and a few unexpected guests to an apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, where Artie Shaughnessy, a zookeeper, pines for a new life as a popular songwriter.
His dreams of stardom are complicated by a stay-at-home wife who longs for the happiness of their salad days, a pushy mistress who is already packing her bags for Hollywood and an AWOL son with his own plans for becoming famous.
Called "enchantingly zany and original” by the New York Times, The House of Blue Leaves is a heartbreakingly human comedy that explores the lengths people will go in pursuit of the American Dream.
After a $30 million renovation, the new Mark Taper Forum begins performances August 30th with the first major production of this American classic in over twenty years.
