The program is an initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions to create sustainable theatre programs in under-resourced elementary schools. The five schools are a part of Los Angeles County. The five schools include: Breed Street Elementary (LAUSD), Cantara Street School (LAUSD), Saturn Street Elementary (LAUSD), Tulsa Street Elementary (LAUSD) and Wild Rose School of Creative Arts (Monrovia Unified School District).

The selected schools will begin a 17-week musical theatre residency in the winter of 2018. Each school will receive performance rights, education support materials and guidance from two teaching artists. The program features a professional development focus, through which participating school teachers partner with Center Theatre Group teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph and music direct, culminating in their first 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. As a capstone to the experience, Center Theatre Group will host a Student Share Celebration in which each school performs one number from their show on the Ahmanson Theatre stage for an audience of students, teachers, family and community members.

On being selected, the principals from each school had the following to say:

“Breed [Street Elementary] is thrilled and honored at being one of the schools selected to be part of the Disney Musicals in Schools. Our partnership allows Breed students to be actively engaged in their own learning as they experience the world of theatre, both in front and behind the curtain. Students will experience the various arts as they help develop the theater production known as ‘a musical.’ Our school community looks forward to learning and working with Center Theatre Group teaching artists as we participate in a positive endeavor to bring the magic of musical theatre to Breed Street Elementary School!” –Patricia Romero, Breed Street Elementary

“We are thrilled to partner with Center Theatre Group and DMIS to foster student creativity, inspire self-expression and promote self-esteem as students create an engaging performance for the benefit of the whole community.” –Melanie Karabedian, Cantara Street School

“When we started our journey for building our Arts Integration program, we made the conscious decision to believe that everything we needed would come our way. Because we use a star as a symbol for positivity, we smiled and sang out, ‘When you wish upon a star…’ as we continued to make connections and request. So, when the Disney Musicals in Schools application was received, we knew this was for us. Then, when the notification was made that we were selected, our staff first cheered and then said, ‘Okay, here we go, it’s happening and it’s now!’” –Tracie Bryant, Saturn Street Elementary & Arts and Media Magnet

“Tulsa School for Advanced Studies is so excited to be selected to be part of the Disney Musicals in Schools program. I know this will be the experience of a lifetime for our entire school community. With the excellence Disney is known for along with the expertise of the teaching artists from the Center Theater Group, our teachers and students will acquire so many valuable skills while creating lasting memories.” –Lester Powell, Tulsa Street Elementary

“Being accepted into the DMIS Program opens so many vistas for our school. You never know who will be inspired to want to be the next Tony Award winner. This collaboration gives our teachers, parents and students the chance to experience the joy of creativity, movement, poise and being part of a collaborative process to bring together a musical performance. I am so thrilled to begin our journey with Center Theatre Group.” –Leslie Miller, Ed.D., Wild Rose School of Creative Arts

Last year, five Los Angeles public schools successfully participated in the program, with 280 students and 28 educators working together to create a culture of musical theatre at their schools. Center Theatre Group is pleased to announce that all schools are continuing to produce musicals at their schools. They include Harrison Elementary (LAUSD), Hope Street Elementary (LAUSD), Humphreys Avenue Elementary (LAUSD), La Ballona Elementary (Culver City Unified School District) and Ritter Elementary (LAUSD).

Using the unique world of musical theatre, Disney Musicals in Schools helps to foster positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents and the community. WRITERS’ WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS

Seven Local Playwrights Have Been Chosen For Annual Residency

Center Theatre Group has selected participants for the 2018-2019 L.A. Writers’ Workshop, where local playwrights are invited to spend eight months in residence at the company researching and writing new works with the feedback from artistic staff and their fellow writers. The workshop, administrated by Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Department, is designed to foster new voices, inspire playwrights to create their best work, encourage bold writing and build relationships among local playwrights, Center Theatre Group and the Los Angeles theatre community.

Those participating in the 2018-2019 L.A. Writers’ Workshop include Luis Alfaro, Aziza Barnes, Diana Burbano, Noah Haidle, Aditi Brennan Kapil, Brian Otaño and Ruby Rae Spiegel. Playwrights were selected by Center Theatre Group’s artistic staff. Each year, the goal is to bring together Los Angeles playwrights, all of varying backgrounds and writing styles, with the intent on creating work that challenges audiences and the surrounding theatre community. To be eligible, the writers must currently reside in Los Angeles and must be either starting work on a new play or interested in starting work on a new play.

The workshop began in November with a weekend-long salon where local experts of the playwrights’ choosing were invited for a Q&A session. Through the session, the playwrights were able to use each expert’s knowledge and experience to garner additional insight on their respective play topics. The workshop will continue with monthly meetings wherein the seven playwrights will come together to fuel the creative process and further the evolution of their work. During these meetings, the playwrights will have the opportunity to lead cold readings, conduct improvisational exercises for scene development, discuss and deliberate relevant topics and invite additional experts as needed.

In June 2019, a three-day retreat will serve as the residency year’s conclusion. Play readings of all seven plays will be conducted throughout the weekend with the help of professional actors hired by Center Theatre Group. Community Conversations are a series of panel discussions that are free and open to the public and feature local thought leaders in dialogue about the context, issues and ideas finding voice on Center Theatre Group stages.

The first Community Conversation will take place at the Japanese American National Museum on Monday, November 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will include a screening of “Stand Up for Justice: The Ralph Lazo Story” followed by a post-screening panel discussion. The screening is a docudrama short film about Ralph Lazo, a Mexican American teen who showed his solidarity during the Japanese American internment when he voluntarily relocated to Manzanar for two years during WWII. The post-screening panel will discuss both the film and Luis Valdez’s “Valley of the Heart” and how they depict this specific moment in U.S. history. The Japanese American National Museum is located at 100 N Central Ave in Little Tokyo. Panelists include “Stand Up for Justice” writer/director John Esaki, civil rights leader Miya Iwataki, Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR) member Kathy Masaoka and redress/reparations delegate Kiyomi Emi, who is also the granddaughter of Frank Emi (co-creator of the Heart Mountain Fair Play Committee).

The second Community Conversation will take place on Wednesday, November 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is titled Dignity Amidst Injustice: From the Japanese American Internment to Today. The conversation will discuss how the Japanese American internment was not a singular, isolated incident, but part of a centuries-long history of exclusionary legislation that continues today. It will also examine how Japanese Americans maintained their dignity—for some through resistance, for others through enlistment and for many through solidarity, strength and the preservation of culture and tradition. This event will take place at The Music Center Annex building, 601 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012, in Rehearsal Room A. The event will be moderated by Leslie Ishii and panelists will be announced at a later date.

The fight to maintain dignity, identity, family and faith are at the heart of this American story deeply rooted in the once-fertile farmland that is now known as the Silicon Valley. “Valley of the Heart” tells the story of the Yamaguchis and the Montaños, two immigrant families struggling to provide a future for their American-born children after the Great Depression on the farmland the two families share.
