Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest (“Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Bullets Over Broadway”) plays Winnie in Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece “Happy Days.” With her husband increasingly out of reach and the earth itself threatening to swallow her whole, Winnie’s buoyant optimism shields her from the harsh glare of the inevitable in this absurdly funny and boundlessly compassionate portrait of the human spirit. Winnie is considered modern drama’s pinnacle female role. She is an endlessly fascinating spirit of buoyant resourcefulness and unassuming grace in the face of inevitable oblivion in a play Wiest refers to as “Hamlet” for women.

'Rotterdam' Opens at Douglas

SKYLIGHT THEATRE COMPANY’S PRODUCTION OF “ROTTERDAM” OPENS MARCH 30 AS PART OF CENTER THEATRE GROUP’S BLOCK PARTY 2019

Written by Jon Brittain and Directed by Michael A. Shepperd, “Rotterdam” Will Play Through April 7, 2019 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre

Skylight Theatre Company’s production of “Rotterdam,” which Center Theatre Group is remounting at the Kirk Douglas Theatre as part ocf the third annual Block Party: Celebrating Los Angeles Theatre, will open this Saturday, March 30 at 8 p.m. Written by Jon Brittain and directed by Michael A. Shepperd, “Rotterdam” is currently in previews and will close April 7.

The cast includes Ryan Brophy, Audrey Cain, Ashley Romans and Miranda Wynne.

The design team includes scenic and lighting design by Jeff McLaughlin, costume design by Naila Aladdin Sanders and sound design by Christopher Moscatiello. The production stage manager is Garrett Crouch.

“Rotterdam” begins in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on New Year’s Eve when Alice finds the courage to come out to her parents. Alice’s decision inspires her girlfriend Fiona to make an announcement of her own. Before Alice hits send on her email, Fiona reveals that she has always identified as a man and now wants to live as one, sending their relationship into a tailspin.

Block Party 2019 also remounted Theatre of NOTE’s production of “For The Love Of (or, the roller derby play)” from March 7 through 17 and will remount Antaeus Theatre Company’s production of “Native Son” from April 18 through 28. The three visiting companies have received the full support of Center Theatre Group and its staff in order to fund, stage and market each production.

“Now in its third year, Block Party continues to be a real treat for our entire organization,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “We all look forward to working with Theatre of NOTE, Skylight and Antaeus and sharing their exciting work with our audiences.”

Center Theatre Group received submissions for Block Party from intimate theatre companies throughout the greater Los Angeles area. The selected productions come from Hollywood (Theatre of NOTE), Los Feliz (Skylight Theatre Company) and Glendale (Antaeus Theatre Company). With Block Party, Center Theatre Group will continue to strengthen its relationships within the Los Angeles theatre community by creating additional avenues for the organization to work with local playwrights, actors, directors and designers. Block Party also helps to foster relationships between Center Theatre Group staff and the staff of theatre companies throughout Los Angeles.

Block Party receives major support from Aliza Karney Guren and Marc Guren with generous funding also provided by Joni and Miles Benickes. This programming is also made possible in part by a Culver City Performing Arts Grant with support from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Previous Block Party productions have included “Ameryka” (Critical Mass Performance Group), “Bloodletting” (Playwrights’ Arena), “Citizen: An American Lyric” (The Fountain Theatre), “Die, Mommie, Die!” (Celebration Theatre), “Dry Land” (The Echo Theater Company) and “Failure: A Love Story” (Coeurage Theatre Company).

Center Theatre Group Announces National Finalists for 2019 AWMC

CENTER THEATRE GROUP NAMES THREE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR 2019 AUGUST WILSON MONOLOGUE COMPETITION NATIONAL FINALS IN NYC

Top Two Students Will Participate in National Finals on Broadway on May 6, 2019

Center Theatre Group has named Dejean Deterville, Mylah Eaton and Daniel Velez as the top performers of the August Wilson Monologue Competition (AWMC) Regional Finals held at the Mark Taper Forum on March 11, 2019. Deterville and Eaton will go on to represent Los Angeles in the national finals on May 6.

Dejean Deterville of South Carolina Virtual Charter School has placed first in the regional competition, earning a $500 scholarship; Mylah Eaton of CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts took second place with a $400 scholarship; and Daniel Velez of Ramón C. Cortines High School of Visual and Performing Arts took third place and a $300 scholarship. Both Deterville and Eaton will also receive a paid trip to New York City to perform on the stage of the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway. They will compete in a semi-final round with 22 other students from cities around the country. Fifteen of those students will be selected for the national finals while the other nine will be part of a performance montage. Velez will serve as the Los Angeles alternate.

This is the eighth consecutive year Center Theatre Group is hosting the Southern California component of the national monologue competition. The program is designed to inspire and educate Los Angeles youth using monologues from August Wilson’s “American Century Cycle,” a 10-play cycle that details the complexity of the African American experience in the 20th century.

Deterville, Eaton and Velez were selected from a pool of 12 regional finalists representing seven local high schools within Los Angeles County. As preparation for the national component of the competition, the three selected students will receive master classes to workshop their monologues.

The program kicked off this season with a preliminary audition that featured 133 students in 10th, 11th or 12th-grade from 31 different high schools in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties. Fifty-seven of those students advanced to a semi-final audition held at The Music Center Annex in December 2018 where the aforementioned 12 regional finalists were selected to move forward.

Center Theatre Group also offers an in-school residency as part of the larger August Wilson Program. The August Wilson In-School Residency is a semester-long program that provides Title 1 students with an in-depth study of the work of August Wilson. This year, classes from Animo Leadership Charter High School, Augustus Hawkins High School, Carson High School and Sonia Sotomayor Center for Arts and Sciences will take part in the residency. The students and teachers from the four classrooms selected attended the AWMC Los Angeles Regional Finals as part of their residency experience, witnessing the power of theatre as their peers bring August Wilson’s characters to life.

AWMC is a national program presented by Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters and hosted in cities throughout the country, including Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; Buffalo, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; New Haven, Connecticut; New York, New York; Greensboro, North Carolina; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Seattle, Washington. Each city runs its program differently and each experience is designed to provide intensive learning opportunities for high school students to study and practice the craft of acting through the work of August Wilson.

The Southern California component of the August Wilson Monologue Competition is led by the Center Theatre Group Education and Community Partnerships Department, which reached roughly 22,000 students, teachers, patrons and community members throughout Southern California in the 2017-2018 season.

Funding for Center Theatre Group’s August Wilson Program is presented by the Center Theatre Group Affiliates. The August Wilson program also receives generous support from Center Theatre Group’s Corporate Circle, the Rosenthal Family Foundation and The Michael Shaw Jacobs Fund.

Center Theatre Group honors its long-standing relationship with August Wilson through its August Wilson Program, as well as through its continued production of Wilson’s work. Center Theatre Group has presented nine of Wilson’s plays, including two world premiere productions of his work. Most recently, Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” had a successful run at the Mark Taper Forum in the fall of 2016. Center Theatre Group announced “A Grand Night,” a special one-night-only event on Monday, April 22 featuring a 5:30p.m. pre-show reception in the Ahmanson lobby, a 7p.m. performance in the Mark Taper Forum and a post-show gala dinner on the stage of the Ahmanson Theatre.

For over 50 years, Center Theatre Group has developed or presented countless landmark musicals. “A Grand Night” will feature a one-night-only musical performance that highlights some of the greatest moments from Center Theatre Group’s history and a sneak peek at seasons to come. The cast for this evening features Obba Babatundé, Darren Criss, Carmen Cusack, Zooey Deschanel, Barrett Foa, Katie Lowes, Adam Pascal and Adam Shapiro. Additional performers and celebrity guests will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 2019 Gala dinner on the Ahmanson Theatre stage will be hosted by Jana Bezdek and Trevor Bezdek. Karla Ahmanson and William H. Ahmanson, Kiki Ramos Gindler and David Gindler, Patricia Glaser and Sam Mudie, Ellyn Lindsay and William Lindsay, Laura Rosenwald and Jamie Rosenwald will serve as gala co-chairs, with Matthew Walden and Richard Weitz as gala performance co-chairs. Performances Begin for 'Lackawanna Blues' at Taper

PERFORMANCES BEGIN FOR RUBEN SANTIAGO-HUDSON’S “LACKAWANNA BLUES” AT THE MARK TAPER FORUM MARCH 5 THROUGH APRIL 21, 2019

Performances begin tonight, March 5, for Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s powerful and touching solo play “Lackawanna Blues” at the Mark Taper Forum. Produced by Center Theatre Group, “Lackawanna Blues” is written, performed and directed by Santiago-Hudson with live music performed by Grammy-winning blues guitarist, composer and actor Chris Thomas King. The production will run through April 21 with the opening set for March 13 at 8 p.m.

Original music for the production is composed by Bill Sims Jr. with additional music composed by King. The design team includes scenic designer Michael Carnahan, costume designer Karen Perry, lighting designer Jen Schriever and sound designer Philip G. Allen. The production stage manager is David S. Franklin.

A magical, musical and deeply personal work by Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson, “Lackawanna Blues” is a reminiscence of his 1950s childhood in a small town on the banks of Lake Erie. Santiago-Hudson takes on more than 20 colorful characters—from would-be philosophers and petty hustlers to lost souls and abandoned lovers—in a brilliant celebration of the eccentric boardinghouse he grew up in. Santiago-Hudson returns to his roots in this tour de force performance accompanied throughout by live blues music.

In his Variety review, Charles Isherwood wrote that Ruben Santiago-Hudson “slips into the skins of more than a dozen characters in the course of the evening, and he makes each distinct and pungent with life,” adding “the humor, ease and vividness of his writing are continually impressive.” The New York Times’ Bruce Weber said, “Mr. Santiago-Hudson does a virtuoso turn as a performer. Delivering anecdotes and testimonials from Miss Rachel's boarders and friends, the population of a child's world, he passes from one identity to the next so fluidly that you barely notice the flip of the switch.”

Tony and Obie Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson recently directed the Broadway debut of August Wilson’s “Jitney” (2017 Tony Award for Best Revival, Tony nomination for Best Direction of a Play) as well as the world premieres of Dominique Morriseau’s “Skeleton Crew” at the Atlantic Theater and “Paradise Blue” at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Santiago-Hudson won a Tony for his performance in August Wilson’s “Seven Guitars” on Broadway and later went on to direct the play. Other directing credits include “The Piano Lesson,” “The First Breeze of Summer,” “Cabin in the Sky” and many more. The multi-award-winning director and actor wrote, executive produced and starred in the HBO film of “Lackawanna Blues.” It received several honors, including Emmy, Golden Globe, Humanitas, National Board of Review and Christopher Awards. Ruben recently starred alongside Anika Noni Rose in BET’s drama “The Quad.” Santiago-Hudson also recurs on Showtime’s “Billions” and starred in TNT’s “Public Morals.” He will also recur on OWN’s new “David Makes Man” alongside Phylicia Rashad later this year. The Lackawanna, New York native opened the Ruben Santiago-Hudson Fine Arts Learning Center in 2014 in his hometown.

The cast includes Crystal Diaz, Elinor Gunn, Liesel Hanson, Faith Imafidon, Cindy Lin, Nadia Marina, Lynn Odell, Alina Phelan, Briana Price, Nicole Gabriella Scipione, Yolanda Snowball, Jenny Soo, Nancy Stone and Tania Verafield.

The design team includes scenic design by Eli Smith, costume design by Vicki Conrad, lighting design by Rose Malone and sound design by Gilly Moon. The production stage manager is Brooke Baldwin. “For The Love Of” follows Joy and Michelle, long-term partners who find their lives turned upside down when Joy joins a roller derby team called the Brooklyn Scallywags. Joy becomes close with the star of the team, Lizzie Lightning, and must decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to follow her heart.

DESCRIPTION: “Dana H.” tells the real-life story of Hnath’s own mother. A nondenominational

hospice chaplain, Dana had stared death in the face on countless occasions, but

when she helped a mentally ill ex-convict turn his life around, she suddenly found her

own life hanging in the balance. “Dana H.” recounts the harrowing five-month

odyssey as she was held captive by, traveled with and eventually escaped her

unstable captor. Told Dana’s own words, reconstructed for the stage by her son,

award-winning playwright Lucas Hnath (“A Doll’s House, Part 2,”

“The Christians”), this innovative work of theatre shatters the boundaries of the form

and of our understanding of good and evil.

The Seven-Show Season Begins September 5, 2019

Artistic Director Michael Ritchie announced Center Theatre Group’s 53rd season at the Ahmanson Theatre featuring seven shows from all across the theatrical spectrum with three exciting musicals, two hilarious one-person plays, the return of a landmark dance theatre piece plus one production to be announced at a later date.

“The 2019-2020 season at the Ahmanson Theatre showcases work from some of the world’s finest artists and creators,” said Ritchie. “From an iconic rock star—Sting starring in his heartfelt and empowering musical ‘The Last Ship’—to a pair of raconteurs direct from Broadway—John Leguizamo in ‘Latin History for Morons’ and Mike Birbiglia in ‘The New One’—we’ve curated a collection of shows that are both passionate and personal.

“Hailed by The New York Times as ‘the best musical of the century,’ ‘The Book of Mormon’ makes its Ahmanson debut. Also, you won’t want to miss the 2018 Tony Award®-winning revival of ‘Once on This Island.’

“Finally, the beloved and groundbreaking Matthew Bourne’s now legendary ‘Swan Lake’ makes a grand return 22 years after its American premiere here at the Ahmanson. Sir Matthew Bourne promises an exciting reimagining of the dance theatre piece that introduced him to Los Angeles.”

“These six productions, joined by an additional title to be announced later, will ignite the imagination of Los Angeles audiences. It’s always an event at the Ahmanson.” The previously announced “Torch Song” will not be a part of the 2019-2020 season at the Ahmanson Theatre.

Direct from Broadway, Tony Award winner John Leguizamo’s critically acclaimed new one-man play “Latin History for Morons” begins previews September 5, opens September 8 and continues through October 20, 2019.

Inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American history books, John Leguizamo embarks on an outrageously funny, frenzied search to find a Latin hero for his son’s school project. From a mad recap of the Aztec empire to stories of unknown Latin patriots of the Revolutionary War and beyond, Leguizamo breaks down the 3,000 years between the Mayans and Pitbull into 95 irreverent and uncensored minutes above and beyond his unique style.

Ben Brantley of The New York Times called “Latin History for Morons” a “surprisingly poignant one-man show.” He went on to say, “the show slyly poses sharp and timely questions of what culturally defines American identity and who, in the nationalistic age of Trump, has ‘the right’ to be here.”

David Canfield of Entertainment Weekly concluded, “With ‘Latin History for Morons,’ Leguizamo isn’t merely teaching us what we’ve never been taught. He’s giving us a space to cheer and cry, to laugh and listen.”

Leguizamo began his work on “Latin History for Morons” with celebrated, sold-out development engagements at The Public Theater and Berkeley Repertory Theatre followed by a Tony-nominated run at Broadway’s Studio 54. Directed by Tony Taccone (“Wishful Drinking,” “Bridge & Tunnel”), “Latin History for Morons” is written and performed by Leguizamo, featuring scenic design by Rachel Hauck, lighting design by Alexander V. Nichols, and original music and sound design by Bray Poor.

“Latin History for Morons” is the sixth offering for theatre’s most prolific modern Latino playwright and his fourth to be produced on Broadway, joining “Ghetto Klown” (Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award), “Freak” (Drama Desk Award) and “Sexaholix…A Love Story”(Tony nomination). “Mambo Mouth” (Obie Award) and “Spic-O-Rama” (Drama Desk Award) each had successful off-Broadway runs. “Mambo Mouth,” “Spic-O-Rama,” “Freak” and “Ghetto Klown” all went on to be filmed for presentation on HBO. “Latin History for Morons” earned Leguizamo a 2018 Special Tony Award.

John Leguizamo’s other theatre credits include “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “La Puta Vida Trilogy” and “American Buffalo.” His film credits include “The Infiltrator,” “To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar” (Golden Globe nomination, ALMA Award), “Moulin Rouge” (SAG nomination), “King of the Jungle,” “American Ultra,” “John Wick,” “Chef,” “Summer of Sam,” the “Ice Age” series and “Romeo and Juliet.” On television, he has appeared in “Bloodline,” “The Kill Point,” “ER,” “My Name is Earl,” “The Brothers Garcia,” “House of Buggin” and “Miami Vice.” His books include “Pimps, Hos, Playa Hatas and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends: My Life” and “Ghetto Klown” (Eisner Award nomination). Leguizamo has been awarded a Tony, two Obie, three Drama Desk, three Outer Critics Circle, one Emmy and six Cable ACE Awards.

Tony Taccone has served as Artistic Director of Berkeley Rep for the past 23 years, during which time the Tony Award-winning nonprofit has enhanced its reputation as an international leader in innovative theatre. Mr. Taccone has staged more than 40 plays in Berkeley including new work by Julia Cho, Tony Kushner, KJ Sanchez, Danny Hoch, David Edgar, Sarah Jones, Culture Clash and Lemony Snicket. He directed two shows that transferred to London, “Continental Divide” and “Tiny Kushner,” and three that landed on Broadway, “Bridge and Tunnel,” “Wishful Drinking” and “Latin History for Morons.” Prior to working at Berkeley Rep, Taccone served as Artistic Director of the Eureka Theatre, introducing the Bay Area to playwrights ranging from Dario Fo to Caryl Churchill. While there, Taccone and Oskar Eustis commissioned Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America” and co-directed its world premiere in Los Angeles; he directed “Angels in America” again in 2018 at Berkeley Rep.

“The New One”

Mike Birbiglia’s one-man comedy “The New One” begins previews October 23, opens October 25 and continues through November 24.

Written by Mike Birbiglia, with additional writing by Jennifer Hope Stein, “The New One” is directed by Seth Barrish with set design by Beowulf Boritt, lighting design by Aaron Copp and sound design by Leon Rothenberg.

Birbiglia’s previous plays “Sleepwalk with Me,” “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” and “Thank God for Jokes” all earned Lortel Award nominations for “Best Solo Show” with “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” winning the 2011 award. In his Broadway debut, “The New One,” Birbiglia delves back into his own life to tell a new story in a new way with the same heart and humor his fans have come to expect.

When she included “The New One” in her list of the best stage shows of 2018, Entertainment Weekly’s Jessica Derschowitz said “hilarious and poignant observations about becoming a parent and the ways his life changed after the birth of his daughter — the ‘new one’ in this scenario — make for some of his best and most heartfelt work yet.” Bob Verini of Variety called “The New One” “a brimmingly warm, entertaining [play] on a universally relatable topic. Birbiglia goes through a life-changing journey; there are surprises and one coup de theatre along the way; and he is most certainly a singular character.”

Mike Birbiglia is a comedian, storyteller, director and actor who has performed in front of audiences worldwide, from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall. His shows, “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” and “Thank God for Jokes,” were both filmed for Netflix. In addition to performing live, Birbiglia is an author and filmmaker who wrote, directed and starred in the films “Sleepwalk with Me” and “Don’t Think Twice.” His book “Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories” was a New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. As an actor, Birbiglia has appeared on “Inside Amy Schumer,” HBO’s “Girls” and “Broad City,” as well as in the films “Trainwreck,” “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Popstar.” He plays the role of Danny Pearson on “Orange Is the New Black” and Oscar Langstraat on Showtime’s “Billions.” He is a contributor to “This American Life” on public radio and was honored with the 2017 Kurt Vonnegut Award for humor.

Seth Barrish is co-artistic director of The Barrow Group. For the Netflix presentations, Barrish was the director of “Mike Birbiglia: My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” and co-director of “Thank God for Jokes.” Theatre directing credits include “Thank God for Jokes” (Lucille Lortel nomination), “All the Rage” (Lortel Award, Outer Critics Circle nomination), “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” (Lortel Award, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations – final performance at Carnegie Hall), “Sleepwalk with Me” (Nightlife Award), “The Tricky Part” (Obie Award, two Drama Desk nominations), “Pentecost” (Drama Desk nomination), “Old Wicked Songs” (Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and Garland Award), “Good” (Straw Hat Award) and many more. New Adventures’ production of Matthew Bourne’s “Swan Lake” begins performances at the Ahmanson on December 3, 2019, and continues through January 5, 2020. Opening is set for December 6.

Over two decades after Matthew Bourne redefined “Swan Lake” for Los Angeles and much of the world, the production returns with a fresh look for the 21st century.

Retaining the iconic elements of the original production loved by millions around the world, Matthew Bourne and award-winning designer Lez Brotherston (set and costumes) will create an exciting re-imagining of the classic production. Acclaimed designer Paule Constable joins the creative team with a spectacular new lighting design.

Thrilling, audacious, witty and emotive, this “Swan Lake” is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm.

Collecting over thirty international accolades including an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary “Swan Lake” for our times.

In addition to “Swan Lake,” which had its American premiere at the Ahmanson in 1997 and returned in 2006, a total of nine other Bourne productions have been presented including “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Car Man,” “Play Without Words,” “Nutcracker!,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “My Fair Lady,” “Mary Poppins” and “The Red Shoes.”

Mixing popular appeal with a ground-breaking, unique theatrical language, world class dancers and high-quality production values, New Adventures is one of the great success stories of British theatre. Under the leadership of Matthew Bourne, New Adventures has collected numerous international awards and a dozen Olivier Award nominations.

Sir Matthew Bourne is widely hailed as the UK’s most popular and successful choreographer and director. He is the creator of the world’s longest-running ballet production, a seven-time Olivier Award winner, and the only British director to have won the Tony Award for both Best Choreographer and Best Director of a Musical. Matthew started his dance training at the comparatively late age of 22 and danced professionally for 14 years, creating many roles in his own work. As Artistic Director of his first company, Adventures in Motion Pictures from 1987 until 2002, Matthew created many award-winning works. Further hit productions were created when New Adventures was launched in 2002, becoming the UK’s busiest and most successful dance company and the major exporter of British dance across the world. Matthew is also a West End and Broadway choreographer; a more than 20-year relationship with producer Cameron Mackintosh has resulted in the globally successful musicals “Mary Poppins,” “My Fair Lady” and “Oliver!” Since 2008, the company has also delivered projects and workshops for people of all ages and abilities to thousands worldwide, every year, as part of the company’s ambitions to develop and nurture new audiences and the next generation of artists. In 1997 Matthew was made an Honorary Fellow of his former college, The Laban Centre, becoming a Companion of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2012. He has seven Honorary Doctorates from The Open University, the De Montfort, Plymouth, Kingston, and Roehampton Universities, as well as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In June 2018 Matthew became the first choreographer to receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from University of Oxford. He is also a Companion of Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and a proud patron of many organizations, including The Arts Educational School, Laine Theatre Arts, CREATE, and National Youth Ballet. In 2015 he became the first dance figure to be given The Stage Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre presented by the UK Theatre Awards. In 2016 he was presented with the Critics Circle Distinguished Service to the Arts Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award in recognition of his outstanding services to ballet. He was knighted in the Queen’s 2016 New Year Honours for services to dance.

Sting stars in the acclaimed UK production of his deeply personal musical “The Last Ship” which begins previews January 14, opens January 22 and continues through February 16, 2020.

“The Last Ship” was initially inspired by Sting’s 1991 album “The Soul Cages” and his own childhood experiences growing up in the shadow of the legendary Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend, England. This personal, political and passionate musical from the 17-time Grammy Award winner is an epic account of a family, a community and a great act of defiance.

“The Last Ship” features music and lyrics by Sting including some of his best-loved songs such as “Island of Souls,” “All This Time” and “When We Dance.” It is the proud story of when the last ship sails. Sting’s Tony-nominated score is paired with a new book and direction by Lorne Campbell (original book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey).
Orchestrations for this production of “The Last Ship” are by Rob Mathes with musical direction by Richard John, costume design by Molly Einchcomb, movement direction by Lucy Hind, lighting design by Matt Daw, sound design by Seb Frost and the dramaturg is Selma Dimitrijevic.

When Gideon Fletcher returns home after 17 years at sea, tensions between past and future flare. The local shipyard, which has anchored the community for generations, is in turmoil. Picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie White (played by Sting) and his wife fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm.

When it opened at Northern Stage, Michael Billington of the Guardian noted “It was received, quite rightly, with full-throated acclaim by its Newcastle audience.” When “The Last Ship” opened in Toronto, J. Kelly Nestruck of The Globe and Mail said “The Last Ship” was “animated by Sting’s clear personal passion for the project and a strong sense of storytelling.”

Sting was born Gordon Matthew Sumner in Wallsend, North East England, the eldest of four children. He grew up in the turmoil of the ship-building industry and wanted to become a musician very early having developed a love for the bass guitar. He played in jazz/rock bands such as "The Last Exit" and other various outfits, including a Dixieland jazz group, and in 1977, he formed the rock trio The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. In 1984, he went on to record solo albums, and has evolved into one of the most prolific songwriters and musicians in the world. Sting has sold close to 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist. He has also delved into acting, having appeared in over 15 films such as “Quadrophenia” (1979) and “Bring on the Night” (1984) and has published a memoir entitled “Broken Music” in 2003, which spent 13 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list. He has received honorary Doctorate of Music degrees from Northumbria University in October 1992, Berklee College of Music in May 1994, University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2006 and Brown University in 2018.

Lorne Campbell is Northern Stage’s Artistic Director. Before moving to Newcastle upon Tyne he was co-artistic director at theatre company Greyscale and a freelance director and theatre-maker. He was also the course leader of the BA Directing programme at Drama Centre, Central St Martins. He is a graduate of the Channel 4 Young Theatre Director’s Scheme and a former associate director at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. Lorne has also worked extensively in mainland Europe and Britain and since 2008, he has been a freelance director with works at The Gate, London, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, Birmingham Rep and Oran Mor. For Northern Stage, Lorne directed “The Bloody Great Border Ballad Project” at the company’s Edinburgh venue (winner of the 2013 Spirit of the Fringe Award).

Back by popular demand, “The Book of Mormon” is making its Ahmanson debut after three previous sold-out engagements in Los Angeles. “The Book of Mormon” will begin performances February 18, and continues through March 29, 2020 at the Ahmanson Theatre. The press performance is scheduled for February 19.

Winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, “Once on This Island” begins previews April 7, opens April 8 and continues through May 10.

Written by the Tony Award-winning team Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), “Once on This Island” is based on the novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy. This production features new orchestrations by original orchestrator Michael Starobin who is joined by AnnMarie Milazzo.

This new production is led by two-time Tony Award nominated director Michael Arden (“Spring Awakening” revival) and acclaimed choreographer Camille A. Brown (NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live”). The creative team also includes Dane Laffrey (scenic designer), Clint Ramos (costume designer), Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer (lighting designers), Peter Hylenski (sound designer), John Bertles/Bash the Trash (unusual instruments), Cookie Jordan (hair/wig and makeup designer), Chris Fenwick (music supervisor), Alvin Hough, Jr. (music director), David Perlow (associate director), Nikki M. “Once on This Island” is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world and ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods, Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

“Once on This Island” premiered at Playwrights Horizons in May of 1990. The Broadway production opened in October of that year garnering eight Tony nominations including Best Featured Actress (LaChanze), Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical and Best Musical. The 1994 West End production won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The revival opened in December of 2017 at Circle in the Square Theatre and would go on to earn nine Tony nominations winning Best Revival of a Musical.

Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are considered the foremost theatrical writing team of their generation and are members of the Theater Hall of Fame. They won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for “Ragtime,” and were nominated for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for “Anastasia,” Twentieth Century Fox’s animated feature film. “Anastasia” is also a long-running hit on Broadway. In 2019, Ahrens and Flaherty were nominated for their fourth Grammy Award, as well as for the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. Other theatre credits include “Seussical” (one of the most produced shows in America), “Rocky,” “My Favorite Year,” “Chita Rivera-The Dancer's Life,” “Dessa Rose,” “A Man of No Importance,” “The Glorious Ones,” “Lucky Stiff” and two upcoming shows include “Knoxville” (premiering at Asolo Repertory Theatre in 2020) and “Marie” (premiering at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in March 2019). They are on the council of Dramatists Guild of America and co-founders of Dramatists Guild Fellows Program.

Michael Arden received his first Tony nomination for his revival of “Spring Awakening.” The acclaimed Deaf West production premiered in Los Angeles and transferred to Broadway. He also won the Outer Critics Circle for Outstanding Director of a Musical and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for the production. Michael made his Broadway debut in Deaf West Theatre and the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of “Big River.” Other directing credits include “My Fair Lady” at Bay Street Theater, “Merrily We Roll Along” at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Los Angeles (where he is currently the Artist in Residence), “LA Ronde” for his company The Forest of Arden and “For the Record: John Hughes” in LA and NYC. His production of “The Pride” opened at the Wallis Annenberg Center in June 2017. Other theatre credits include “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “The Times they are a Changin’,” “Ragtime” (Avery Fisher), “It’s Only Life,” “Swimming in the Shallows,” “Ace,” “Juno,” “As You Like It,” “The Winter’s Tale,” “The Secret Garden,” “Pippin” (Mark Taper Forum), and “Aspects of Love” at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London.
