About

Art endlessly captivates and inspires and Georges Seurat’s 1884 masterpiece A Sunday on the Island of La Grande Jatte (in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago) is no exception. One hundred years after its debut, the painting inspired Pulitzer Prize-winning theatrical collaboration between James Lapine, then an emerging playwright and director, with legendary Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. In this conversation Lapine joins curator Richard Rand to discuss the making of the musical Sunday in the Park with George. The program coincides with Lapine’s recently published book Putting It Together: How Stephen Sondheim and I Created 'Sunday in the Park with George'.

About The Book: Putting It Together: How Stephen Sondheim and I Created 'Sunday in the Park with George' (2021) By James Lapine

Through conversations between Lapine and Sondheim, as well as most of the production team, and with a treasure trove of personal photographs, sketches, script notes, and sheet music, the two Broadway icons lift the curtain on their beloved musical. Putting It Together is a deeply personal remembrance of their collaboration and friendship and the highs and lows of that journey, one that resulted in the beloved Pulitzer Prize–winning classic.
