2000: Alice Tuan

(Playwright)

Alice Tuan is a playwright and teacher. She is best known for AJAX (POR NOBODY), premiered at NY's Flea Theater, toured to the Melbourne Fringe and produced at Toronto's SummerWorks Festival. Other plays include HIT (Los Angeles Theater Center), BATCH (Humana), LAST OF THE SUNS (Berkeley Rep, Ma-Yi Theater), ROARING GIRLE (Foundry), IKEBANA (East West/Taper, Too, Dramalogue Award) and COASTLINE (Serious Play!, Edinburgh Fringe). Four of these plays are archived in the Billy Rose Collection of the New York Public Library. In 2000, she received both the Richard E. Sherwood Award and the Colbert Award for Excellence. Tuan is a Core Writer at the Playwright Center where she recently work shopped her surfer play CALIFORNIA LOVE, which she wrote as a Playwright in Residence at the Ojai Playwrights Conference. Her blog Alice in Shanghailand was featured in Love of Sun, an online installation where four Chinese artists look at California and four California artists look at China. She is currently commissioned by Yale Rep/Binger Centre for New Theater and also working on a musical about jazz in the Stalin era. Before she was a playwright, Tuan taught English as a Second Language in China and Los Angeles.
