August Wilson In-School Residency
The August Wilson In-School Residency is a unique semester-long program that engages high school students in an in-depth, personal, and artistic study of the great American playwright August Wilson and his theatrical contribution to society.
- Students will explore the life and career of August Wilson as an American playwright and understand the scope of his American Century Cycle.
- Students will engage in an interactive and multidisciplinary investigation of August Wilson’s work through its characters, themes, and stories.
- Students will experience high-quality live theatre while seeing peers perform in a professional setting.
- Students will begin to define and develop a sense of their own contribution to the world through a final project.
Center Theatre Group selects up to four classroom teachers from Los Angeles County public high schools to participate in each year’s August Wilson In-School Residency program. School with a Title 1 status are eligible. Teachers from all subject areas and all high school grades are encouraged to apply.
Selected classroom teachers partner with Center Theatre Group teaching artists over the course of 15 sessions in presenting a curriculum that introduces students to August Wilson’s American Century Cycle. The four participating classes also attend the August Wilson Monologue Competition Los Angeles Regional Finals at the Mark Taper Forum.
There is no cost to participate. However, participating schools are responsible for providing teacher release time for two full-day Team Building Meetings, one half-day Evaluation Meeting, and transportation for students and chaperones to attend the August Wilson Monologue Competition Regional Finals.
Applications are now open for the 2018/19 August Wilson In-School Residency.
