L.A. Writers' Workshop Festival 2019

Celebrate the unrivaled diversity and excellence of the playwrights who call Center Theatre Group and Los Angeles home at our second annual L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival: New Plays Forged in L.A.

We're proud to showcase bold and original new works by L.A. Writers’ Workshop participants that represent some of the freshest voices and impulses in the modern American theatre. The Festival will feature three readings onstage at the Kirk Douglas Theatre followed by a celebration of our local playwriting community.

Join us for a thrilling glimpse into the process of new play creation in Los Angeles, where many of the world’s most exciting theatre artists work and live.

About the Plays

By Laura Jacqmin (2017/2018 L.A. Writers' Workshop Member)
Directed by Monty Cole

Campaign follows four men, on an island in the middle of nowhere, fighting for The Mission. Four men, perfectly content to keep watch (over nothing) and swear allegiance (to even less than nothing)—to “protect what’s theirs.” Then, a woman shows up…and suddenly the mission isn’t quite so clear anymore. Campaign is a hilarious and absurd exploration of toxic masculinity, male trauma and bagel bites. The cast features Jon Chaffin, LaNisa Renee Frederick, Simon Helberg, Raymond Lee, Jason Ritter, and Xochitl Romero.

Sleeping Giant

By Steve Yockey (2011/2012 L.A. Writers' Workshop Member)
Directed by Michael Matthews

When a firework-filled marriage proposal goes very wrong, the accompanying explosions wake up something very old that’s been sleeping in the nearby lake for thousands of years. What follows are intimate, darkly comic, and sometimes startling vignettes about the lengths people go when they desperately want something to believe in. The cast features Philippe Bowgen, June Carryl, Shalita Grant, Teya Patt, and Michael Grant Terry.

By Dominique Morisseau (2016/2017 L.A. Writers' Workshop Member)
Directed by Goldie E. Patrick

Sarah, a savvy slave turned Union spy, and Sandra, a brilliant professor in a modern-day private university, are facing similar struggles, even though they live over a century apart. Confederates leaps through time in order to trace the identities of these two black American women and explore the reins that racial and gender bias still hold on American educational systems today. The cast features Zibby Allen, Cherise Boothe, Sophina Brown, Tiffany Oglesby, Nija Okoro, and Cornelius Smith, Jr.

Special thanks to the many talented L.A. Writers' Workshop participants from the past 14 years of the program who submitted their work for our consideration, and to fellow Workshop members who served on our selection committee.

About the L.A. Writers' Workshop

Since 2005, we have invited seven local playwrights to spend a year at Center Theatre Group researching and writing a new work with the feedback of their fellow writers and artistic staff. Membership in the L.A. Writers' Workshop begins with this residency year and continues with events and activities designed to build community and support professional and artistic development. The L.A. Writers' Workshop is designed to inspire playwrights to create their best work, foster important voices, encourage bold writing, and build relationships among local playwrights, Center Theatre Group, and the L.A. theatre community.
