Center Theatre Group partners with local artists, organizations, schools, libraries, and other groups to enrich cultural conversations in L.A. neighborhoods and to encourage Angelenos to bring the art of theatre deeper into their lives, and to use it to share and explore their own stories.
Through free workshops, events, productions, discussions, and other activities that take place at traditional and nontraditional venues, we are working to connect with community members and artists throughout our city, and to join in and facilitate inclusive and thoughtful cultural conversations.
Check here for upcoming free community events and programs at venues around Los Angeles, including The Shop, our costume and prop shop and our hub for Boyle Heights programming.
At The Shop and The Music Center Annex in Downtown L.A., and hosted by community partners in different neighborhoods, we offer workshops on theatre techniques, from playwriting and acting to art and design. Taught by local artists and artisans, our workshops are designed for people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience.
In partnership with local theatre companies and artists, we bring new and exciting works to locations around Los Angeles by co-presenting readings by professional actors in both English and Spanish.
Exhibits at partner organizations around Los Angeles, including branches of the Los Angeles Public Library, feature costumes from recent Center Theatre Group productions along with information on how they are designed and made, allowing a glimpse behind the curtain.
We partner with schools and educators from around the region on a number of initiatives and programs.
We host moderated discussions with panels of renowned experts, community opinion-makers, and cultural thought-leaders in dialogue about the context, issues, and ideas finding voice on our stages.
Chisme y Queso
An event series hosted by Center Theatre Group in partnership with Eastside Luv, Chisme y Queso invites patrons and artists to gather and anonymously share their own chisme—gossip—and have it performed onstage (atop the bar) by local actors. Alongside the improvised chisme, actors perform skits by up-and-coming writers from around Los Angeles. Chisme y Queso is part of a two-year community initiative in Boyle Heights funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
