Why are the arts important?
The arts enrich our lives. They make us think. They entertain, inform, and enlighten us.
What upcoming show are you most looking forward to?
The line-ups at the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Kirk Douglas Theatre are all impressive. If I had to choose, I would say Grey Gardens—The Musical, as I am a sucker for a great musical (and I am a big fan of both Rachel York and Betty Buckley!).
What is your idea of the perfect play?
One that educates me and touches my heart. In this regard, the Taper’s production of Bent comes to mind.
What playwright would you trust to write your life story? Who would you cast as yourself?
Moisés Kaufman. I love his writing. (Perhaps he would team up with Sondheim and make it a musical!) As for the actor, it’s a toss-up between Bradley Cooper and Nathan Lane.
What is the most important quality in a charitable organization?
Unwavering commitment to its mission.
Which theatrical skill would you most like to have?
The ability to sing.
What play feels most relevant to your life?
Tony Kushner’s Angels in America.
Which playwright would make the best lunch date?
Harvey Fierstein.
