Once scenic and lighting designers create the look and feel of a production, carpentry and electrics professionals step in to make their designs a reality. A master electrician is in charge of installing the lighting, focusing it, and making sure everything is safely connected to power. A master carpenter understands how to read technical drawings, and how to translate them into materials like wood, paint, and metal. Larger theatres will often use the same carpenters and electricians for every show. These jobs are represented by the IATSE labor union, which stands for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
