A literary manager reads and evaluates plays for a theatre company and makes suggestions to the rest of the artistic staff about which plays or projects might be produced. This is usually a full- or part-time position at a midsize or large theatre. Literary managers have a background in playwriting or dramaturgy, and may have majored in theatre or English in college. Sometimes they get to work with playwrights directly, commissioning them to write plays for a theatre, helping them develop works-in-progress, and/or running writers’ groups.
