Lighting designers don't just make sure the audience can see what’s happening onstage—they also create mood and direct focus. Designers use everything from state-of-the-art LED lights that move by themselves to sources as simple as a flashlight or candle. They often study theatrical design in an undergraduate or graduate-level program, but are sometimes self-taught. Lighting designers are rarely employed by just one theatre. Instead, they are hired on a per-show basis by different theatres. Like all creative independent artists, lighting designers often travel to theatres in different cities or even different countries, working on many shows over the course of the year.
